Ladakh Himalayan Retreat: Best Place to Stay and Explore Leh

Sridhar Salian

We recently came back from Ladakh with a big bundle of pleasant and beautiful memories to cherish from the region. Our stay in this hotel made them even more beautiful.

Leh-Ladakh remains a feat for travellers and tourists alike. It’s tough terrains, rough weather and lack of on-the-way facilities make the challenge seem so huge. But thanks to the Hotel Ladakh Himalayan Retreat, travellers can now explore this heaven while enjoying the best of comforts and luxury. Camps being the only option to stay as you drive far from Leh, this hotel is one of the best comfortable accommodations while you are in Leh.

The Shanti Stupa as seen from the hotel

The hotel is located away from the busy streets yet not so far from the market. The Leh main market would be approximately 1 km from here. While you walk from the market, you should descend 700-800 meters along the Fort road to reach the hotel. As you walk you can spot the best view of the hotel surrounded by snow capped mountains and magnificent views of Shanti Stupa and Stok Kangri in the background.

Traditional Buddhist Architecture for the Hotel

The hotel building is constructed with a traditional architecture with heavily designed wooden blocks sitting above the window panes. The interiors are elegant with authentic Buddhist paintings and artifacts. The lush green lawn with an adjoining garden is best to spend an evening watching the Stok ranges with a cup of Kashmiri Kawa in your hand. The hotel also has a souvenir shop with a very good collection of silk, pashmina and cotton textiles.

Interior of the hotel is very intricately designed with a traditional touch of local culture and beliefs. The dining hall and lounges with books and magazines and a small library are available for guests. Carrom board is available on 1st floor. It’s a bliss to watch the mountains through all the windows in the rooms and corridors.

There are some beautiful personal touches like an ornate Buddha statue adorning the table on the first floor. You’ll witness and appreciate such creativity of decor in most places throughout the hotel, lending a very personal feel to the ambience. Below are the pictures of the dining space.
Cosy room with a breath-taking view: We stayed in a deluxe room and it was pretty good. The room is of decent size with all the amenities like a double bed and other furniture, TV with DTH, dressing table, central heating system, 24hrs hot&cold running water toiletries, etc. The view of mountains and gardens from the balcony is amazing. All rooms do not have a balcony, so if you are looking for one then please ask while checking in. It has 16 well-furnished rooms and 1 suite and 2 junior suites with all modern amenities.
Other amenities include laundry services, sperate kitchen with dining, request to doctor on call, travel desk to cater, telephone and the internet with Wi-Fi facilities. The hotel arranges tours, treks, cultural events for their guests to the popular/offbeat sights in and around Leh, including many famous monasteries and scenic spots. Foodies are in for a gastronomic treat at the on-site restaurant, which serves mouth-watering veg and non-vegetarian delicacies. Also, a separate kitchen with dining facility is available at the property. Adding to this is a pleasing ambience and never-ending conversations which will sum up to a memorable experience. Unwind and have a relaxed stay at Hotel Ladakh Himalayan Retreat! Food is a very important part of travel and we were glad to be in safe hands!
Special recommendations to try their pickles kept in porcelain jars and the traditional Kashmiri Khawa tea.

While at the hotel, you should definitely try the local food preparations like Thenthuk – a hand pulled noodle soup prepared in the Tibetian style and Thupka –  a noodle soup with dough dumplings, mixed vegetables and meat (optional). These food varieties might not taste as delicious when you have them in the local stalls in Leh markets and other places. Also a special mention of the drink, Khawa tea. This mild and refreshing tea is made by brewing tea leaves with chosen spices, saffron, and few dry fruits. You can have as many cups of it without having a heavy feeling in your tummy.

Must visit places in and around Leh:
We used Leh as a base and visited other places with night halt and returned to the hotel. Coming back to LHR after those short trips were like coming back to a family & home coming for us. On our return, we ensured we sat on the spacious lawn to relax with a cup of khawa or coffee.
Leh Palace, Hall of Fame Museum, Shanti Stupa, Gurdwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill, Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers at Nimmoo are some places to mention.
The beautiful royal ancient monasteries like Thiksey Monastery, Stakna Monastery are a must visit.
Evening visit to local Leh markets for shopping is recommended to pick some souvenirs.

Special Mention of the Owner: This review can’t be complete without a special mention of the hotel owner, Mr Sonam Wangdus. He is the primary reason for the superb experience we had in Hotel Ladakh Himalayan Retreat. We planned our trip on our own and his transportation charges of Innova cab for a complete Leh-Manali road trip and Leh sightseeing was very reasonable. His prompt communications and patient responses to all our queries and his customer centric approach were liked and appreciated by all of us. We would recommend anyone to stay in this hotel because of this person in addition to all the good features of the hotel.
The booking process through e-mail and phone was very smooth. Mr Sonam is a man of his words. We got what we had asked for and more.

Most of all it is the feeling that one is cared for and valued that sets the Ladakh Himalayan Retreat apart from other similar hotels. Ladakh is an arduous and a challenging destination. Ladakh Himalayan Retreat helps you cope and recover to enjoy your holiday. Highly recommended !!!!

This might help:

1. Mr.Sonam, the owner is a local with good connections and will be happy to arrange a driver and plan your day trips. Driver/guides are careful and safe with a knowledge of treacherous road conditions matched by local knowledge.
2. The entire travel arrangement including permits etc. will be organised by owner Mr.Sonam on prior discussions.
3. Suite – rooms on the first floor are recommended as they offer stunning views of the snowy mountains and serpentine valley.
4. Do not miss the beauty of early morning sun rays on snow capped peaks which can be directly viewed from your bed.
5. Acclimatisation and Altitude Sickness – Ladakh is a high altitude cold desert with a low level of atmospheric oxygen. On 1st day don’t plan for sightseeing. Acclimatise with the weather and drink lots of water.
