Endless spice plantations, chirping birds, meandering paths, gushing streams, an infinity pool extending into the endless valley with an amazing view, wonderful hospitality and sumptuous food- that is how I would summarize Kurumba Village Resort. One would never go wrong in choosing Kurumba Village Resort for a relaxing vacation in the lap of nature.

The Kurumba Village Resort is located amidst the fragrant spice plantations off the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Highway in the Nilgiri mountain ranges. As we arrived at the parking lot, much of the noise from the busy highway was dampened by the dense forest. We were welcome at the reception with a Vanakkam and garlands stringed with a variety of locally available flowers. The reception was built in the form of an open-sided thatched hut with aesthetically designed interiors blending into natural surroundings. After treating us with a tasty cup of tea, the lobby staff directed us to our cottage that was located farthest from the reception. There was a small stream running right next to the cottage. The balcony of the room opened up to a stunning view of the stream negotiating the rocky terrain with the hills in the backdrop. The bricked walls of the cottage were painted in shades of white and earthen tones and there were many tribal artifacts adorning the interiors of the cottage. The tastefully designed bathroom with a bath tub needs a special mention. Even the bathroom had an amazing view of the forest and the hills through the huge window designed on the side of the bathtub. The best part was the assortment of handmade soaps and shampoos infused with the flavors of different spices.

There are many more things which we loved about the resort. Please read on to know more details.

About the Resort:

Nestled amidst the fragrant spice plantations surrounded by the lush green tropical jungle of the Nilgiris and many hills in the upper Burliyar region near Coonoor, Kurumba Village is the ultimate resort for someone willing to get pampered in style in the laps of nature. All the buildings in the resort are actually surrounded by numerous trees such as jacaranda, rosewood, jackfruit, avocado, allspice, clove, and nutmeg. There is a beautiful stream with cascaded waterfalls flowing in the middle of the resort. The resort is a bird watcher’s paradise because of the amazing variety of avian species which are habited in the surrounding forests. The best part about the resort is the infinity pool that extends into the endless valley. It is really hard to keep track of time while one lazes in the pool enjoying the breathtaking view of the valley.

Accommodation:

The resort offers three types of rooms – The Jacuzzi suites, The Kurumba Suites, and The Kurumba Cottages. The cottages in the resort are spread out in the spice plantation at different levels on the hill and all of them are connected by a meandering path. Every cottage or Suite has all the modern amenities such as a flat-screen TV, a small refrigerator, safety locker, kettle, and hair dryer. The location of the individual cottage is planned such that the guests have ample privacy. Since the cottages are spread out across the 10 acres of the plantation, the resort provided buggy rides for transportation from the cottages to the reception and other facilities in the resort. The Jacuzzi suites and the Kurumba suites are located close to the reception and the pool area. All the different types of rooms and cottages have a very good view of the Nilgiri mountains and the forest.

Activities:

Kurumba offers a wide variety of activities to engage both the adults and kids during the stay. One can choose from a wide array of indoor and outdoor games, nature walks, plantation walks, bird watch, trekking, or try the rope courses. I would greatly recommend the spice plantation tour with the naturalist who has a very good knowledge of the flora and fauna that are endemic to the Nilgiris. The resort also arranges for some special performance for the guests during every evening. All the activities are offered as part of the package. If none of these activities interest you, the reception has a very good collection of books. The resort also has a spa named Ayurshala which offers a variety of ayurvedic treatments and massages at nominal rates. The spa has the best view of the Nilgiri hills compared to any other location in the resort.

Wishineering:

The resort has this special concept where the guests make a wish and the resort makes all the possible efforts within it means to make the wish come true. One can also choose from one of the special wishes from the list offered by the resort. Imagine a private evening with a romantic candle light dinner in a natural cave with a private chef at your service. Do check out the resort’s websites for more such wishes.

Food:

The in-house restaurant in the resort offers both Indian and continental delicacies along with a few tribal dishes that are cooked and served in earthen cookware. The widespread of the buffet is a gastronomical delight for any food lover. The evening snack is provided at the makeshift tea stall located near the poolside. Sitting under the spice trees and sipping a cup of masala chai and tasting the hot pakoras and the bhajis is an experience in itself.
